On this trip, I experienced the beautiful scenery and historical importance of Uluru with my own eyes, which I want to share with you.

 general information

The story of a trip to Uluru (Ayers Rock) – alone, fun, and a little sad

This trip to Uluru was a little different. I flew alone from Melbourne. Yes, alone! Without telling Tiasa. It’s a habit to go with him every time, but this time I thought I’d go around on my own. But I knew in my heart that Tiasa would be very angry if she found out.

the beginning

Got up early in the morning and rushed to Melbourne airport. Tickets were pre-booked — Qantas Airlines, with a return ticket costing roughly AUD 480. Tiasa would have said, “This is so expensive! Shouldn’t have taken Virgin?”

Arriving at Uluru (Ayers Rock)

best time to visit Uluru
A metal chain handrail runs up a steep,  ayers rock formation at Ayers Rock under a clear blue sky, guiding a pathway to the summit.

Arriving at Uluru felt like I had landed on Mars. Red dust, emptiness all around, and huge Uluru (Ayers Rock)

in the middle — strangely beautiful. I only saw it in pictures before, now standing in front of it, I understand why it is given so much respect.

Hotel and expenses

Stayed at Outback Pioneer Lodge at Ayers Rock Resort — AUD 180 per night. I stayed in a wooden cabin, made of natural felt. Had a barbeque at night with other tourists — befriended a German couple who reminded me of Tiasa.

Places I have visited

  1. Uluru Base Walk – Got up early and started walking before sunrise. 10.6 km round trip. Walking alone, I sometimes felt like Tiasa would have said, “Don’t walk all this, rent a bike!”
  2. Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – Another red rock wonder! Went on the ‘Valley of the Winds Walk’, the wind was such that the hat blew off.
  3. Field of Light – Uluru at night is absolute Thousands of lights flashed together — then came a call from Tiasa. “Are you at Uluru? And you didn’t tell me?” Then a minute of silence, another minute of anger, and then “video call, all to show.”

Some expense accounts

  • Flight: AUD 480
  • Hotel: 3 nights x AUD 180 = AUD 540
  • Tour Package (Uluru & Kata Tjuta): AUD 250
  • Food and Drink: Around AUD 50 per day = AUD 150
  • Field of Light tickets: AUD 50

Total Cost: Around AUD 1470

If Tiasa knew, he would say, “With this money, the two of us would have travelled!”

last day

Last morning took a helicopter ride over Uluru (Ayers Rock)

(AUD 150). The whole thing looked like a scene from a movie. Looking down from the helicopter, I could only think of Tiasa — if only I had brought her!

come back

Back in Melbourne I brought Tiasa a little boomerang gift — made by local artists. But I know, souvenirs will not break the anger.

Tiasa said, “Next time you don’t pick up, you’ll have to clean the house by yourself!” — I smiled and said, “Next time we will both go, this time I have saved all the stories for you!”
