Beginning
The first things that come to mind when we think of Tasmania are its beautiful wilderness, old forests, and steep mountains. Cradle Mountain is one of these natural wonders. It stands for peace, raw beauty, and adventure. During my month-long visit to Tasmania to see my husband, I experienced many beautiful places, but nothing compared to the peace and beauty of Cradle Mountain. We chose to go to this famous place for a day trip from Hobart. It was a long drive, but the views were stunning, I saw wildlife up close, and the trails were peaceful. All of these things have left an eternal mark on my heart. This article is more than just a travel guide; it’s a story about my trip and everything you need to know if you want to go on a similar trip. A real one-day trip from Hobart to Cradle Mountain with personal experience and a travel guide. I am from Bangladesh, and my name is Bristi. I went to Tasmania for a month to see my husband, who lives in Hobart. We went on many one-day trips to this famous Tasmanian destination and places in Tasmania during that time, like its forests, beaches, markets, and national parks. Cradle Mountain stood out from all the other places we went. It was a long day, but it was one of the best days of my life. This article will help you plan a one-day trip to this famous Tasmanian destination. It will tell you everything I saw, felt, and learned while I was there.
What is the location of Cradle Mountain?
It’s about 310 kilometers away from Hobart. It takes about 4.5 to 5 hours to drive there. These mountains are just a tall peak; it’s a mix of untouched wilderness, snow-capped hills, calm lakes, hiking trails, and animals. There, I experienced a sense of timelessness.
Beginning the trip in Hobart, we left on our journey at 5:30 AM, which was early in the morning. It was dark and cold, but we were too excited to see Cradle Mountain for the first time to sleep. We rented a small hatchback car in Hobart so we could be in charge of our trip. Information about renting a car: Cost (AUD) of the item: Car rental for one day: 115 AUD. Gasoline: 65 AUD. Total: 180 AUD. Tips for Renting a Car: Make your reservation 2–3 days in advance to avoid high rates at the last minute. Pick small cars because they get better gas mileage and are easier to drive on narrow roads. Always fill up your tank before you go.
First Stop

Sheffield, the Town of Murals. About three and a half hours into our trip, we stopped in Sheffield, a pretty little town that feels like an outdoor art gallery. Murals that tell stories about Tasmania’s past and nature cover almost every wall in town. It was quiet, cool, and perfect for Instagram. We had breakfast at a cosy café where we had meat pies and hot coffee. Breakfast for two costs 19 AUD. A small mural in a back alley that shows an old woman feeding a bird is a hidden gem. It made me feel something. I took a lot of pictures here. It’s worth stopping for at least 30 minutes.
Getting to the Cradle Mountain
Visitor Centre. It took another 90 minutes to get to the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre, which is the main entrance to the national park, from Sheffield. Here, you get the National Park Pass. Get trail maps and tips. Take the shuttle bus to Dove Lake and other trailheads. Fees to Get In: Day Pass: 25 AUD for each adult (shuttle included) Important Notes: If you’re not staying at a registered lodge, you can’t drive your car past the Visitor Centre. Buses that take you to and from the airport run every 15 to 20 minutes. There are clean bathrooms, seating areas, and staff to help you. Hiking the Dove Lake Circuit. We picked the Dove Lake Circuit, which is the most popular and easiest hike for beginners. Information about the trail: Length: 6 km (round trip) Time: 2 to 2.5 hours Level of Difficulty: Easy to Moderate This path goes around Dove Lake, which has beautiful views of Cradle Mountain reflected in its icy-blue water. There are wooden boardwalks, gravel, rocks, and trees along the path. Hidden Spot: About halfway through the walk, just past the Lake Lilla junction, we found a quiet spot under the trees where we sat still. Nobody else showed up. I could only hear the wind and birds. It was so peaceful. Favourite Moment: Getting to the famous Boat Shed, a wooden cabin by the lake with Cradle Mountain covered in snow in the background. It was like stepping into a postcard. Animals We Saw There are a lot of animals at Cradle Mountain. Animals will come to you if you are quiet and respectful. You don’t have to look for them. We saw: Wombats: One was peacefully eating grass near Ronny Creek. Pademelons are small animals that look like kangaroos and hop around in the bushes. Currawongs are black mountain birds with yellow eyes. Echidna: Slowly moving across the path in the woods, I think that wild animals have never been so calm and natural around people. They’re not afraid; they just live with you. It’s lovely.
Meals and Food
There aren’t many cheap places to eat near Cradle Mountain. We packed our lunch in Hobart so we could eat it on the way. What We Brought: Sandwiches with chicken, Bananas and apples, Bars of chocolate, Bottles of water. Cost of a homemade lunch: about 20 AUD. Going out to eat? Here are the choices: Cradle Café (close to the Visitor Centre): 14–18 AUD for sandwiches, 5 AUD for coffee, Snacks: 3 to 5 AUD. Hotel Restaurant at Cradle Mountain: Main Meals: 25 to 45 AUD. If you’re staying the night, it’s good for dinner. Tip: Bring snacks and water bottles with you. It’s easier and cheaper that way.
